Workplace Ergonomics – Your Health In The Office

Workplace ergonomics refers to a work environment conducive to the health and well-being of all employees and others within it. An average employee spends approximately 50 hours of their week at work. That’s about one-third of one’s waking life every year. Furthermore, workers will consume about one-third of all their meals at work.

In other words, the workplace is almost like a second home for most of us.

You spend about half of your waking hours at your job. While certain jobs like construction or manual labour have clear hazards, you can’t assume that if you are clocking time in an office environment that it’s a healthy place to be. Many occupations deliver stress, sedentary behaviour, and unhealthy habits.

Typically, there’s nothing wrong with using a basic workstation, but when you spend most of your waking hours sitting at that desk, you may want to consider making it a more comfortable space, for short-term and long-term health. If you have pain or fatigue in your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, upper back or neck it may be related to using a computer. Perhaps you cannot afford to significantly change the work area in your room, but you can probably make small adjustments to promote comfort.

But whether you work from a home office or sit in a corporate cubicle, there are things you can do to make your workplace better for your health and wellbeing. Here’s how to give your office space a health makeover.
